Over the summer of 2015, I had the privilege of being able to volunteer with Girls Rock NC (GRNC) at one of their many rock camps. GRNC is an organization focused on empowering young female, gender-neutral, and transgender kids through the power of music and performance. As a band manager, I participated in workshops addressing intersectionality, band practices, and songwriting workshops, as well as got to watch the incredibly inspiring and tear-jerking end-of-the-week performance for the community. The experience was pure magic, to say the least. The young, smart, talented people that GRNC attracts give me this insanely comforting feeling that our future is in good hands. The camp taught me the importance of finding activities that simultaneously benefit yourself and your community, by marrying your interest to the needs of your surroundings.
As a band manager with limited musical skills, my main role was that of a mentor, a buddy, a "hey, let me play with your hair" sit-in, a conflict-resolver, and a mediator. It's a great sense of pride helping to pull something creative and cohesive out of a group of kids and have a blast doing it. We called ourselves "proud band moms." Mostly, I learned that no summer of my life will be complete again without a girls rock camp. What an important lesson. Comments are closed.
